general brake repair question
It's time to get my brakes done. Is it really necessary to have my back brakes replaced or can I get away with just having the front ones done? tyVM

That is dependant upon if the rear brakes are worn to the point that they need replaced. A thourough inspection is required to determine the answer to your question.

Basically, if the shop is telling you they need replacing, and you're wondering if you can get by without the rear brakes being up to snuff, the answer is no.
While the front brakes are the most effective at bringing a car to a complete halt, the rear brakes serve an important roll in slowing the car down. Without the rear brakes, your front brakes will tend to lock up more (or not work properly at all if you have anti-lock brakes) causing you to scuff your tires, lose control of the car, and generally be very unsafe.

Just to add to what TAC said.
Don't let anyone talk you into using a lesser grade of brake pad material for the rear brakes. The front & rear brakes work together for effective braking. Use at minimum a semi-metallic brake pad.
Due to brake wear, you may be able to replace the rear shoe/pads at every other service interval. But they should still be inspected to see if there is enough pad to last.
Also, the rear brakes act as your emergency brakes incase of a brake system or hydraulic failure.

I can fix a whole lot of stuff............I can tear up even more!
