heater fan resistors
How hard would it be to change the resistors in a 1999 ford explorer sport?.I noticed I do not have any fan speed on the first two settings of my fan but I do have the third, but if I recall the highest speed is basically a direct wire to the fuse/battery.Any help would be appreciated.thanks

Re: heater fan resistors
It is not hard to do. The resistor is located under the hood close to the blower motor. Remove the big wiring connector and than there are 2 little 8mm headed screws that hold the resistor in place. Look at the connector closely as they are known to burn and short out. Autozone has it for about 30$ and they have the connector for about 14$. Good luck.

Re: heater fan resistors
I am positive it is in the evaporator housing under the hood. Autozone also has it located there. Ford factory manual has it located there. So I am positive that is where it is located.

1.Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2.Disconnect the wire connector from the resistor assembly.
3.Remove the 2 screws attaching the resistor assembly to the blower or evaporator case and remove the resistor.
4.Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Check the blower motor for proper operation in all blower speeds.

Re: heater fan resistors
Ok Homer. There is no air intake tube for the heater/ air conditioning. The air is drawn in through the vent in front of the windshield wiper. The resistor is bolted to the heater housing. PLEASE take our advice and see if it is there instead of arguing it is in the air intake tube. The air intake tube is what supplies the air to the throttle body on the engine.

allow me to weigh in my 30 + years. the blower resistor is in the evap case as stated by the other well qualified techs. for futher clarification here is step by step from ford. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?chapterTitle=Heating+And+Air+Conditioning&partName=Chassis+Electrical&pageId=0900c1528018eeea&subChapterTitle=Blower+Motor+Resistor&partId=0900c1528018eeda">http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repair ... 528018eeda</a><!-- m -->

Re: heater fan resistors
The diagram from Mitchel Is showing the resistors mounted in the air intake tube this is wrong...
The heater blower motor switch resistor is located on the evaporator housing in the
engine compartment.
Three resistance elements are mounted on the resistor board to provide four
blower motor speeds.
Depending on the heater blower motor switch position, series resistance is added
or bypassed in the blower motor circuit to decrease or increase blower motor speed.
The thermal limiter will open the resistor coil circuit when the temperature reaches 250°F
interrupting the blower motor operation in ail speeds except Hi. You problem could be either
the resistors or the" THERMAL LIMITER."

If you have the EATAC.
The function of the blower motor speed control is to convert low power signals from
the electronic automatic temperature control module to a high current, variable ground to
feed for the blower motor . The blower motor speed is infinitely variable and is controlled
by the electronic automatic temperature control module software.

jgate,I don't know if it makes any difference my my fan settings only give me 3 speeds?Thank you for your help as you probably realize I was not arguing with any one. :o

Re: heater fan resistors
Homer, you may not have been arguing, but we answered your question and you would not follow our instructions or suggestions. It is kind of demeaning to us if you will not take or at least try our advice. No one wants you to use another site. We are happy with you here. Just remember, youj asked for advice, we gave advice, you had it in your mind there is an intake tube. So if it makes you feel better, I will apologize and bow out of the post. Seems you have others you prefer anyway.

Re: heater fan resistors
Not so sir,I will take your advise at any time, as all I was saying was going by the drawing I could not see how the arrow pointed to the blower as it showed more to the air intake.I know for sure I am not as mechanically hands on as you and your staff, but I do most of my own work myself. Please feel free to advise anytime. The last thing I would do is argue with anyone that knows more than me.Thanks.Oh and about making me feel better by apologizing, don't bother as I'm a far bigger man than that.

Re: heater fan resistors
Way 2 old let's put this behind us,do you think you might be able give me a more instructive location as when I look at the blower I only see the main power supply, but to the right[looking in from the front]I do see the two heater hoses.Any diagrams I've seen I can't seem to find it.Thank again for any help Smile [it must be just me,for that I'm sure]

The 1 is plug to the blower motor. The center hump is the blower motor. The 2 is connectoer for the blower resistor.
