Clutch Problem

Clutch Problem Posted 7-1-2003 23:56

I have a 1977 International Scout that was in a freak accident. The truck ran great prior to a tree snapping in the wind and landing on the hood. Apart from a squashed air cleaner and broken carb linkage, the engine and transmission appear fine. That is until I try to put it in gear. It's a 4 speed manual, and I never had a problem prior to the tree. Now I can't get it into any gear while the engine is running. The clutch doesn't appear to be engaging. The linkage from the pedal to the tranny appears fine and works as it should. Any ideas on what the problem is and how I might fix it?

From your description of the crash, it sounds like the engine took quite a hit. Check for broken engine mounts that might keep the clutch linkage from working properly, and have someone work the clutch pedal while you check the linkage for 'wrong' movement. If the linkage seems all right, take off the clutch cover and see if the clutch release fork came off its pivot- its a ball and socket arrangement, and you should be able to snap the fork back into place if that happened. From the way you describe not being able to shift gears while the engine is running, it sounds like the clutch is not releasing, and gears clash with first and reverse. Second through fourth are synchronized, and there shouldn't be any clashing if you try those gears. Is that your situation? Let us know how it goes.
