VW compressor??
Has anyone heard of a kit to convert a bug engine into an air compressor? It runs as a two cylinder engine with a two cylinder air compressor. It think it changes the cam. Puts out lots of air.

Hi mankster, That is an interesting consept. Didn't realize the vw engine could be so versitile. Although it was the engine of choice to power the zamboni ice machine I drove for awhile. Be interested in hearing if the kit is available. Bill

I heard my name again!
Being an old bug guy myself, I actually have heard tale of this being done, but not knowing all the posibilities I had to post the question on the Bentley Publishers Volkswagon forum. These guys are the VW experts from all over the world. I should get some sort of answer from them shortly and will post it back here.

This does sound pretty cool. I'm not even sure you would really need the change the cam - it might be something you could do with just a good pipe-welding setup.

A VW can run fairly well on two opposing cylinders if you adjust the timing (this might be where the Cam would come into play...) But the real change would be to the intake and exhaust manifolds. cCut the intake pipe to the 2nd and 4th cylinder right after the Y and weld them shut, and take the remaining stubs for 2 and 4 off completely so the port is open to the air. Then do the same for the exhaust, except make up a Y pipe with head-plates to mount to the heads on one side, and a air hose connecter after the Y. Tie the starter and a kill switch in with the pressure regulator on the compressor tank, and you're good to go. As an air-cooled engine there should be no colling system needed, although you have to remember to vent the exhaust outside if you plan to use it in the garage.
