Last week I was on my computer and I noticed it was ackting a little
odd. Any right click functions were very slow and opening programs
would light up my modem. It made me feel a little nervous so i started an investigation at once. I discovered that my Antivirus had been disabled
and it wouldn't open. The next day all was fine again. That next night the same thing happend, then, for a week it said that I was up to date while trying to do an update or "you have no Norton products on your sys",
I couldn't even do an online scan. It made up nonsence errors. Finally I uninstalled my antivirus program and tried to reinstall it, I got nothing but errors on the install. My other computer was the same :!: and when I
checked it, my main computer was off and the second one hadn't been on for a week :!:
I believe I had been hacked or maybe got a trojan or worm :?:
I always keep my MS Norton updates current and I even do online
scans from other virus detector programs, I use anti spyware programs.
I also have my whole system behind a router firewall :!:
I guess the moral of the story is if you are online you can not be too
carefull, or safe, so do a BACK UP or maybe loose all, thankfully
I have been using Norton Ghost for the past couple of years
If anyone has any questions or comments, fire away  bruce
I seem to go thru this type of problem on my PC all the time. Each time I turn it on and work a while I find that something else isn't working properly.
I'm running Norton 2003 and I'm pretty sure that when it detects a virus that has attached itself to a file, it just eliminates the file and virus rather than fixing the problem. Well that works unless the file was a component of Windows, like a dll or driver file, then all you can do is reload your operating system, which means loosing some data no matter what you do to back everything up. We're screwed either way Bruce.
If anybody else out there has a better way of dealing with these problems, let me and Bruce know about them. :?
Thanks,
Roger 8)

hi guys-I can't say the same I think ive gotten three viruses in three years, i run avg virus and so far it catches almost everything,I cant run norton it doesn't like some thing in my mail and won't allow mail???but dude your anti virus should have a box to check if you want it to tell you it has caught some thing...mine does and norton is way better....
Norton will give a warning if it detects a virus and depending on
the way you have your options set up... will tell you by default
that it has repaired or quarentined or could not repair the virus.
It should not deleat any good files unless it finds a virus that you got before an update by then it can be too late, then it will try to clean
the file/files infected. the key to any anti virus software is to be up to date
and catch a virus BEFORE it gets in. And there is now way they can
say all viruses are covered either
I use Norton Ghost to do a full system backup after a good complete
install with all the setups and programs. I keep it on a spare
disconnected drive. That way I can do a complete restore in 20min.
The key is to do it right after the fresh in stall so you know it's safe.
I have done three formats changed drives twice and used the same
backup for all, it (Ghost) is worth every penny TTYL, bruce

hi buce-it's the dreaded melinium, the one they threw together for the 2000 new year????I personally have't had any problems but others have told me nightmares???I contacted norten and they also said it was fighting with some thing in my mail system don't use it???
I havn't used Milinium too much but I think it is like a messed up W98
trying to look modern, I find 98 easy to get around, straitforward.
XP I find glamoruos, like shiny wrenches that slip in your hands, but it has very nice extras, I won't go back, even though when I use
98 it feels like slipping on an old pair of cumfy jeans, If your sys
is up to it I would recomend upgrading or even down grading.
(I hope my foot doesn't get into my mouth) ,bruce

ya bruce I hear ya on the 98 glamourized version called millineum,,,but like you said it's comfy and I very seldom have problems with it probably cause i"am a computer dummy and couldn't tell if it is screwed up...but it lets me talk to THE DUDE so it cant be all that bad......
Guys! ...for me to be working on my PC...that's a scary thing. I drag a few tools in from out in the shop and start taking it apart. If I knew what I was looking for it would take all the fun out of it.
I might do just as well covering my eyes and jabing around inside the case with and old stick out of the back yard. That would be safer for me anyway.
Are you suppose to unplug the PC when you work on it? ...if so , how are ya suppose to know if you're making any changes.
I'm just trying to tweek it a little...there must be an adjustment screw in there somewhere...just like a old carb. I'll just unplug a few things now and see if that helps--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------... WOW !!!
That was the wrong thing to do!!! Oh well, maybe the problem isn't in here. I'll download a few more Windows updates.
...and pretty soon there won't be enough room on my hard drive left for any other software...so all I'll be able to do is chat with my ol' buddy Crank and the rest of the crew until the lights go out.
The best part is going on line looking for computer trouble answers. You can ask ten different people the same question and get ten different answers. We aren't that bad on the automotive forum...are we???
MTD i'm glad to see you keep safety in mind, covering your eyes)
I have found a way to check your PC.
1, Run the CPU real hard for 10 minutes with the fan off, then very
quickly put your toung on it, if it smells like a sunday BBQ it is
probably working  , but 9 other people may have a differant answer
PCs are definatly a new challenge, ya can't look, listen
or use common sense to figure them out, they can be just like women  oops   it takes a lot of time,
I'd feel confedent saying no one knows it all.
When your screen goes black and will not work, you know you have made changes, that is when the fun starts
My Dad tells me he just "threw" his second perfectly good printer
in the trash, he is learning !!! bruce

hi bruce and dude-the way I fix mine is shut it off....then turn it back on a little later if it works great if not I grab that big tower thing and go to the tech....but my motto is if it's got screws or bolts holding it together the it was meant for me to take apart    when I got married 17 years ago I bought her the biggest microwave sears had ya no the bigger the better theory...well 17 years later and it still works perfectly, but after remoldeling the kitchen she wanted a new one???I said ok when this one dies get another(she wanted a little petite one)well one day it died,so I decided to fix it,got it all apart and their was screws, wires, clips, switches all over the kitchen floor, with of course the wife bantering over my shoulder time for the trash.....I almost gave up when I saw this silver box with hazardous waste stickers on it,well I didn't touch that box I put it all back together and to my wifes dismay it worked just like new...and 6 years later it's still working,I only keep it cause it rubs the wife the wrong way....I'am gonna come home from work one day and thiers gonna be a sledge hammer hanging out the side of it.....and as far as the computer goes were all doing allright cause were online ????    ........crank.it
Crank,
...we are a lot alike...I never have been able to resist taking things apart just to see if I could build it back a little bit better.
When I was 17, I tore a brand new VW bug apart and modified it so many times that I was finally able to melt the pistons down trying to chase down a Porche 911 one morning. We did run somewhere over a hundred for a while before she cooked. It took me a few years but I finally learned to leave them alone if they run. :? I don't think I could have caught that 911 in anything.
The same thing goes with my computer, I've messed with it until half the stuff it use to do it won't anymore.
...and, yeah, we are alright to just be able to be here online but mine won't even let me order tools online anymore. ...how cruel is that?
It may be that my wife has rigged it to do that. She knows it's way to easy to buy stuff online and I already can't walk around in my shop.
Hey! I hadn't thought of using a sledge hammer to try to fix my PC !!!
Do you think that would void the warranty?

Crank -
Give her a surprise for Valentines day - a gift certificate from Circuit City for a new Microwave. Of course, you need to scout it out first so you make the certificate for something in the middle of the pack. Give her cart blanch without a certificate and you might end up with something that microwaves, bakes bread, and slices julian fries - and costs a grand.

Yup - me too.
From 4 years old, my grandfather started giving me old watches that didn't work, and I'd take 'em apart (never got them back together though). Then we'd build the plastic model cars, but swap parts from different models, heating them up over the stove to bend them so they'd fit. Lack of finances in high school meant taking apart anything that sputtered, rattles, or dragged behind the car to fix it yourself.
I'll never forget the first time I tried my hand at exhaust systems. I found out that no matter how sturdy the u-clamp connection might feel, you still need to use the hangers. Dirt roads and unsupported exhaust systems lead to glass packs sitting in the middle of the road.
OK guys, sorry for so many add-ons to this thread. My last one (for now...)
Anyone using Norton Internet Security or Norton Firewall has probably noticed that web pages look funny, with holes and white spots, sentences that break in weird places, and tons of links that don't work. The reason is the ad-blocking "feature" in Norton. It is defaulted to on, but I strongly recommend turning it off.
It looks for any picture that is similar in size to an ad and cuts it out. It looks for any links that include the letters "AD" anywhere in the link. It blocks links to about 300 normal sites, including parts of washington post and about 50% of the major online web catalog sites. It's really attrocious what it does, and most people who install it don't even realize that it is doing so. Sure, it blocks pop-ups (which I HATE), but the Google toolbar does a better job without destroying your web pages.
The Antivirus is no problem, and I use it myself. But the firewall features in their other products are really destructive.
