2001 windstar multi function switch
Good afternoon from PEI. Canada. Problem with my wipers shutting off. Dealer told me the problem is in the multifunction switch located in the dash, giving that they want 190.00 plus cad. I am thinking salvage or after market. Can someone tell me were in dash it is located and what it looks like?
I am pretty sure he was not talking about the operating switch on column.

Re: 2001 windstar multi function switch
The wipers on some 2001 are controlled by the multi-function switch. and the FCM (front control module ).
Do you have the controls for the for the wipers on the dash or on the turn-signal/wiper control switch ?
to change the multi-function switch, on the column.
1- -turn the tilt wheel handle and shank counterclockwise and remove
2 --remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds
3-- remove the screws in the multi-function switch
4-- unplug the terminals...
installation in reverse..

For the FCM
Prior to removal of this module, it is necessary to upload the configuration
information to a scan tool, this information will need to be downloaded into the new module.
1--Remove the instrument panel lower steering column cover. (located just above the DLC for the scan tools)
2--Remove the instrument panel cover reinforcement.
there should be only a couple of torx screws holding this module in place.
3-- unplug the five electrical connectors.

Re: 2001 windstar multi function switch
Before you change the FCM you might want to check with your local Ford dealer,
for this recall.

Recall Date:AUG 15, 2001

Model Affected:2001 FORD WINDSTAR

Summary:VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. CONTAMINANTS SUCH AS WATER, SALT, AND WINDSHIELD WASHER SOLUTION CAN ENTER THE WIPER MOTOR COVER ASSEMBLY THROUGH PINHOLES ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE COVER THAT ARE USED IN THE MOLDING PROCESS. IN ADDITION, ON CERTAIN OF THE VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN FEBRUARY AND AUGUST 2000, A SWITCH LOCATED IN THE PLASTIC COVER OF THE WIPER MOTOR GEAR CASE COULD MALFUNCTION AND OVERHEAT. EITHER OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN LOSS OF INTERMITTENT WIPER FUNCTION, LOSS OF WIPER PARK FUNCTION, COMPLETE LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION, SMOKE, OR IGNITION OF THE PLASTIC COVER MATERIAL. CONTAMINANT ENTRY COULD ALSO RESULT IN UNINTENDED WIPER MOTOR OPERATION.

Consequence:SWITCH MALFUNCTION IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR WHEN THE INTERMITTENT SETTING OF THE WIPERS IS BEING USED, OR WHEN SNOW OR ICE OBSTRUCTS THE BLADES FROM RETURNING TO THE "PARKED" POSITION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. LOSS OF VISIBILITY WHILE DRIVING INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW WIPER COVER WITH IMPROVED SEALING AND WATER RESISTANCE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAIN AUGUST 27, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.
