Remember when ?
Cogitations by Uncle Doug
Memories.
You pull into the gas station and three men come out to service your car. One pumps the gas another washes the wind shield and the third is checking the oil and water. This is a true service station, something you wont find anymore.
The fill up cost less then five dollars no matter how much your tank holds, and with it you get a free dish, glass or some gift or other. Are you lost or just planning a vacation? No problem, the gas company will send you a free package of maps and other things you will find useful on your trip. The station has free maps of every state and will change your oil while you wait in a comfortable waiting room with new magazines.
Remember when the radio had something on it besides music? The Lone Ranger and Tonto. Inersanctum (the squeaking door) Amus and Andy, Dragnet and many more. You could set and listen or work as you saw the whole thing in your mind. It was great to listen to these stories as you waited for your car to be lubricated.
Remember when your child was sick and all you had to do was call the doctor at home? he would come to your home because, and I don't know why modern doctors have forgotten this, it was to cold, hot or wet for the child to come to him. Besides he didn't want that sick child to infect others in the waiting room. Remember when that doctor was the same one who did anything short of major surgery? Remember what it cost? Oh my, has that changed.
Remember when you were on vacation and you stopped at a road side store or stand that sold souvenirs? If you turned them upside down they didn't say "made in China". I never have figured that one out. What do they sell to visitors to China? Remember when a restaurant that had a sign saying "Home cooked meals" really had them. Remember those big frosted mugs of root beer? Those first hamburger stands when you could have a hamburger, fries and a drink all for less then fifty cents. Remember when a cup of coffee was five cents and it never went empty?
Most of all, remember when the local blacksmith shop could and did, make or repair any part for anything, and did it while you waited..
