98 escort cooling fan
1998 escort wagon. Is the electric cooling fan suppose to come on when I start the car first thing in the morning? Don't know how long it stays running, but when I get to work (45 miles later) it is not running, and does not turn on after i shut the engine off. The temp gauge runs at half way, and there is no overheating issues.

Re: 98 escort cooling fan
The engine cooling fan motor is controlled during vehicle operation by the constant control relay module (CCRM) the power train control module (PCM) and the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. The engine cooling fan motor operates under the following conditions:
when the engine coolant temperature reaches 105°C (221°F).
And when the A/C is turned on.
The fan does not run all the time,, only when the temp gets above 221 degrees F, it will run for 2 or 3 minutes
( some models very in time ) until the temp drops below 205 F, the only time the fan runs constantly is when the A/C is energized..

I was aware of how it's suppose to work. Any suggestions on where to begin to troubleshoot? The easiest and cheapest to start with would be the ECT...correct?

Do you have the defroster turned on when the car is started? Possibly a weak relay also.

started the car this morning with defroster off, and fan did not come on. but did come on when I turned on defroster after engine was running. I know the fan comes on with the a/c, but is it suppose to with the defroster?

Yes it is. It works with the compressor. The a/c compressor comes on whenever defrost is selected. It is used as an "air drier" to assist in the defrosting process.
