1999 ford explorer sport 4x4
Thanks guys the brake issue in january went fine.Did need torches and impact gun though.Another question,I have been told my right front tie rod has play in it.If I was to pick up the part is this a job I may be able to do in the driveway.I sure don't mind giving it a shot, but is there any tricks I need to know? Thanks homer.

Are you talking inner or outer tie rod?
The outer tie rod end should be no problem , just remove the wheel,
loosen the jam nut, remove the cotter pin , remove the castle nut.
don't forget to count the number of turns required to remove the tie rod end.
the inner tie rod might be a little bit harder to do depending on how high you might
want to jack this Explorer up and still feel comfortable in your drive way. With either one I
hope you will be using jack stands on a solid surface.

jgate when you say inner and outer do you mean when threaded together they are one piece or two completely different arms and locations. When I had a tire changed they said my right tire had some play before the left side tire moved.I do notice inner wear on that tire(right side).Thanks.

Yes ...there is an inner and outer tie rod end..
The inner tie rod end screws onto the rack, and the outer screws onto the inner tie rod
on one side, and the onto the steering knuckle.

These two rod screw together to make one ..
either side could have play, you will have to diagnose which one is the one with the play.
but of course if it is the inner tie rod end that is bad, i would just replace both, since the outer
tie rod end has to be removed to replace the inner tie rod.

If it is the inner tie rod this tool realy makes the job a breeze..

[attachment=0]
Works on inner tie rods with inaccessible wrench flats on many trucks and SUVs. The long socket slips over tie rod end and crows foot engages on the socket for easy removal and installation. Fits many Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Chevrolet truck and SUV applications. Also fits some Cadillac Escalade, Hummer H2, Honda Passport and Jeep Liberty applications. Tool comes with four crows feet, sizes 1-7/16", 3.6mm, 38.4mm and 42mm. This tool from matco is $90.00, but iam sure you can find one of the cheaper modles..

Thanks guys it ended up being the front right bearing.Had some noise, but the play in the bearing was terrible. They rechecked the tie rods, ball joints, all are good now.I guess it all depends on who you talk to and where you go.homer Big Grin
