1999 ford f150 brake question

I have a ford 4x4 f150 1999 and I recently did a pad job on the back end. here recently I heard a popping and grind and tore it apart and everything looked good and tight. took the rotor off and the emergency brakes where the culprit. my question is can I run with out the shoes and not use the emergency brake or do I need to replace them. I can't think of once that I ever used the emergency brake. thanks for any reply
