Runs GREAT! But No Power...
I remember a friend of mine had rebuilt the motor in his Mustang. It was his first time rebuilding an engine & didn't want ANY help, just a pointer or 2.
Anyhow, he comes driving up to my house a coupla days after he finished and it sounded good! He also agreed but said "It runs GREAT, but it doesn't have any power at all!!! I step on it, the RPM's climb but it's like a run down dog! Worse than before I rebuilt it!"
I got in & took it for a drive...Sure as hell, No Power at all. I checked over a few things. Carb adjustments etc. Couldn't see anything visibly wrong other than more oil than usual from one of the breathers and a sliiiiiight bit of smoke from the exhaust.
So we let it cool down a bit and have a couple beers. Later on I hooked up the compression tester. With disbelief I went from Cylinder to Cylinder and ALL of em were about the same at around 35 or so PSI. I'm thinkin to myself "What the hell???" So I tell him that he's got REALLY low compression and asked if he got the cylinders bored & honed. Yup, showed me the reciepts. Asked him if he got the right sized rings and THATS when he proceeded to tell me:
"Yeah, I even made sure to line all the gaps up when I put the pistons in!"
Needless to say, I spent the rest of the weekend pullin his motor apart to rehone the cylinders & install new rings.
