1997 MERCURY SABLE
Looking at buying a 1997 Merc Sable 4 door sedan. Wondering why all of them seem to look like the rear suspension is "bagged out". When giving it the "bounce test" it don't seem to give any extra bounces, but when driving on rough roads or hit a pot hole, there seems to be a clunking sound from the rear. I initially thought it was a tailpipe hanger or something like that but it is coming especially from the right rear of the car. Nothing else seems to be wrong with it and it runs like a dream otherwise. Clean interior, good glass and only 225,000km or 130,000 miles on it so it should last a while I'm thinking. Looking to pick the brains of the guys that have "been there, done that" Any suggestions?

With the Taurus and Sables, you might want to check the coil springs a little closer, I have replaced a lot of broken coils springs on these models.

Re: 1997 MERCURY SABLE
So was that a recall issue? Or just a Tech Bulletin? Faulty from factory but replacements are better quality? I hope so. I did buy the car, and took it in for an oil change and the "kid" said the driver's strut was "f$^ked". I really thought it was the passenger side, but..... I imagine I should change both anyway right. At least when I think back to my garage days, struts/shocks/etc should be changed in pairs right? Checked out prices on these "quick struts" (coil spring and strut combo) they were running around 220 a side plus install plus an alignment right? Damn, this "deal" is starting to look like not a deal afterall..... oh well live and learn they say. If I could just get the "learn" part down I would be happier LOL!!!! Thanks for the quick reply.

No .....no recall just a TSB...I have found that aftermarket are better quality than Ford OEM, when it comes to struts and springs.
And yea they should be replaced in pairs.
