I Have a 2002 volvo xc70 that has a turbo leak and the passenger side front axle is clicking and grinding. The dealer is estimating $350 to replace the turbo o ring and aprox $600 for the front axle. $1000 seems high to me, but its hard to find good independent shops in the area. Does it seem likely I could reduce the cost of this repair by not using a dealer?

Independant shops are usally cheaper (I prefer less expensive) than a major dealer .They have less overhead and dont have to eat mnfg warranty work. Some smaller shops dont have the resources and cant do all work. Check any shop you chose with BBB , ask about warranty BEFORE work. Make sure all charges , shop supplies ,haz waste fees ,etc ,are explained by both dealer and ind shop. Check for certified mechanics ,there are good uncert techs but you have no way of judgeing them. No matter who you use , COMMUNICATE. Most disputes have been from lack of it. And yes those charges are in line for that work and you prob can shave 5-10% off by shopping around.
