dead cylinder - cummins diesel
Well, it sure looks like I've got a dead cylinder.
running ok one minute then started running rough. (like a gasser with plug wire pulled)
1998 Dodge w/24v Cummins - Bosch VP44 injection pump.

Not throwing any codes. lift pump pressure is 17 psi & steady. injector pump new last October.
I can loosen the injector lines at the head and see loss of power on all cylinders except #1. (can't test #2 because intake plenum). Valve springs all look good and valve clearance checks OK. Swapped injectors around but still nothing.
Everything seems to point back to fuel delivery, ie; injector pump.
I don't have the necessary equip to check cylinder compression, but I'm hard pressed to believe I've dropped a valve or cracked anything. (nothing in the oil or water).

Any ideas before I take it to a real mechanic for diagnosis.

I can fix a whole lot of stuff............I can tear up even more!

Hey firedoggy, u seem to relish doing the stuff that others pass on 8) . A tool that may help you on this and other kinds of ,need to take a peek at jobs, is a portable bore-scope . My son got one for his shoppe from the tool truck (mac?). IT has earned its keep many times over . Not to mention the money I saved on my colon exams.
