the first thing you need to do is find a parts store that can retrieve the code your vehicle has when your check engine light comes on. As far as trans dipstick location, I dont have a listing for a Ford Freespirit. I show a Freestar which is the minivan or a Freestyle which is a small SUV.

Re: 2005 ford freespirit
There is no transmission dipstick for this car. Auto makers have started switching to non servicable transmissions. By that I mean no dipstick and it usually needs checked or changed at a quickie lube or dealership. Some have even went as far as just drain and fill with no removable tranny pan. Post the code if you get it from your local parts store. BTW, have you had any recent work done to this vehicle?

Re: 2005 ford freespirit
On the Freestyle/Monterey the trans is a 4F5ON ( the old AX4N/S trans), and it does have a fluid level indicator(dipstick). the part number is 5F927A228AA.
it is located between the motor and the fire wall,Just ahead of the BELL housing. kind of low and hard to find. It will not have the big loop on the top as earlier sticks, kind of an foreign design, all you will see is sort of a fluid "cap" on the top of the stick.
