98 Cherokee 4.0 Fuel Filter
I need someone who knows the Jeep to tell me something. Is it me or are there no fuel filters on this model? I have 2 different explanations so far. 1) there is a filter ontop of the fuel tank and it is part of some fuel pressure regulator and should be changed every 30-50,000 miles. Or, 2) the filter is actually a part of the fuel pump. And you have to replace the fuel pump to replace the filter. Which is it?

I love my Jeep and I am a Mopar man, but someone was smokin crack when they designed this! What is the deal with this? Is there a wear item that you can change to replace the filter?

Thanks for your help.

Re: 98 Cherokee 4.0 Fuel Filter
Actually you have 2 filters... one on the frame rail and one in the tank.
The combination Fuel Filter/Fuel Pressure Regulator is remotely mounted to the
vehicle body, above the rear axle and near the front of the fuel tank .The regulator
is calibrated to maintain fuel system operating pressure of approximately
49.2 psi ± 5 psi at the fuel injectors. It contains a diaphragm, calibrated springs and
a fuel return valve. The internal fuel filter is also part of the assembly. The regulator
acts as a check valve to maintain some fuel pressure when the engine is not operating.
A second check valve is located at the outlet end of the electric fuel pump..
Both fuel filters at bottom of fuel pump module and within fuel pressure regulator
are designed for extended service. They do not require normal scheduled maintenance.
Filters should only be replaced if a diagnostic procedure indicates to do so.

And you wonder why chysler/dodge/jeep went belly up. I've changed more of those "extended life" dissaster's than i care to remember. Most modules failed do to sending units , plastic hoses splitting & pump failure everything but plugged filters. Now their going to bed with audi ,europe speak for junk. To bad they dragged Jeep down with them. IMO

Re: 98 Cherokee 4.0 Fuel Filter
Well my Jeep is over 200,000! (next to the slant 6, the 4.0 probably the most reliable engine ever made). And it still runs good. I am just tuning her up before I make a move to VA. So then, are yaw saying that I shouldn't have to replace the filter in the pressure reg or the pump unless say a low fuel pressure would indicate that something needs attention?

Nice to hear from you again re-tired. You helped me figure out some issues with my old monte. It is running great and passed down to a family member.

Thank you guys for your help!

Jeep actually recommends that you don't have to change the filters, unless for a diagnostic reason.

I didnt mean that jeeo is bad ,and yes the 4.0 is a good engine, lots of pep. It's just that mopar cant seem to make an electrical system . They have the same problems for years. and they seem to be dragging what was a simple rugged line down the gimick road . The talking puter on the New Yorker ring a bell? Soooooooooo as jgate has said , if it aint broke dont fix it. BTW glad the m/c is still running.

"Your door is ajar. Your door is ajar. Your door is ajar----Don't forget your keys." Yea I remember those old New Yorkers. Those 2.5 Turbos had problems too! They didn't seem to last long. But when I call myself a Mopar man, I am mainly referring to 75 and back Big Grin .

I see that you are from Ocala. I am from Deltona. About an hour or so from you.

i owned a 72 charger. A friend had a 69 with a hemi. Those were the glory days.but even then they had electrical gremlins. but killer engines.Thats why NASCAR banned the hemi . Mopar took its motor and went drag racing.

Yes they did. I sold my 69 Superbee (clone) before coming into the Army and I pretty much restored it completely and it still wouldn't turn over with the key sometimes. I got use to getting out and hitting the solenoid with a screwdriver. It's those dang wire harness connectors on the firewall! They did always have issues!
