I just thought I'd get this thread/area started.
When I first started my own business my only form of advertising was "word of mouth". I built up my reputation whilen working at other's shops. When I started thinking of opening up my own I started spreading the word about my ideas and people took my number. I then went online and ordered business cards from Vista print (cheap prices back then) and started giving a few out to each of my friends (for their use and to give out), dropped some off at the parts stores, and other places. Then I went online and did a very simple ad on two or three different sites. I have had to do no more then that. Its a small area here and once your name is out there you are in.
I guess it all depends upon your location as to your methods needed to get your shop's name out there. Cheap ads are easy to find online (such as craigs list, yellow pages, merchant, etc..), do not over look advertising in your phone book (yes some people still use the book

), local papers, vehicle signs, banners, business cards, and local public radio. There are a lot of approaches, which one you take depends upon your location and money situation. Just make sure your advertising is geared towards the clients you want.
So thats my .02 and its worked for me.
